A large number of families of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities, continue to face barriers to education, healthcare, therapy, rehabilitation, social protection and livelihood opportunities. Many families also experience financial insecurity and limited access to information and government support.
The PARIVAAR-SAHYADRI Self-Help Group Programme aims to strengthen families through collective action, mutual support and economic empowerment.
The programme promotes the formation and strengthening of family-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) through which members can work together to improve their social and economic well-being.
The groups are encouraged to undertake:
Regular savings and internal lending/credit activities.
Access to suitable government schemes, financial services and livelihood opportunities.
Small-scale income-generating and productive activities based on market opportunities.
Skill development and entrepreneurship training.
Financial literacy, digital financial literacy and responsible use of banking services.
Awareness and access to social security, disability and welfare schemes.
Community awareness and advocacy on the rights of persons with IDD.
Emergency support and collective problem-solving mechanisms.

The SHGs are designed to be self-managed, participatory, transparent and democratic, with members taking responsibility for group decisions, financial records and activities.
The programme places particular emphasis on the participation and leadership of women caregivers and family members, who often play a central role in the long-term care and support of persons with disabilities.
